Munitions and Firing Ranges
US Army, Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (CHPPM), Maryland
Principal investigator for project (2004-2009) developing wildlife toxicity assessments for multiple military-unique compounds (i.e., perchlorate, breakdown products of RDX, nitroguanidine, thiodiglycol, etc,) and environmental health assessments for new military compounds. Guided data evaluation and development of summary reports on amphibian, bird and mammal toxicity data for these compounds.
US Navy, Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, California
Lead ecological risk assessor (2002-2005) for BERA of a former skeet range located partially within the National Wildlife Refuge providing
habitat for the federally endangered species. Developed a weight-of-evidence risk assessment approach (measurement of site-specific bioaccumulation, bioaccessibility, and target-organ tissue levels; bioassays for plants and sediment invertebrates) and oversaw development and implementation of sampling and analyses plans. Performed analysis of soil and sediment bioassays, bioaccessibility analyses, and other field-collected data. BERA served as foundation for development of remedial goals that addressed contamination while limiting habitat loss.
US Navy, McGregor Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP), Texas
Senior ecological risk assessor for large-scale assessment of ecological risks associated with perchlorate (2007-2008). Oversaw development of BERA, led review of perchlorate bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity data to support assessment.
US Air Force, Hill AFB, Utah
Lead ecological risk assessor for screening-level ecological risk assessment to support the RCRA permit for the
Thermal Treatment Unit (TTU) of the Utah Test and Training Range (2002-2010). Evaluated risks to terrestrial receptors from metals, PAHs, explosives, and other organic contaminants following detonation/destruction of ICBM boosters. Performed bi-annual updates based on field monitoring data to document compliance with existing RCRA permit terms.
